How we can help.

OIM has started an initiative to participate and contribute to society in the way we know best. It is a tough situation for the whole community, and everyone must look into the mirror and think what they can do.

What we can do.

We know product development, are ISO 13485 certified and have a great deal of weight in medical technology and mechanics. Therefore, we have identified 3 areas in which we would like to develop products to participate in the fight against COVID-19. It’s about reducing spread, aiding medical personnel and helping patients.

How you can help.

We want our network to be a part of and support with a number of product development hours, where OIM contributes additionally with as many hours as we receive. The more companies that participate in this, the faster we will be able to launch products that will have the chance to contribute to the community, in the fight we all face.

01 Prevent.

Public Space Hygiene.
The issue being that touch-point surfaces quickly become contaminated.
Washing one's hands is considered one of the most effective ways of reducing spread of germs and viruses. However, only about 19% do it after a toilet visit. Thus spreading disease and viruses rapidly. Public contact surfaces are one of the most contaminated areas that we have.

There are currently a number of existing products solving this when it comes to the handle. However, we had trouble finding a solution that operated the locking mechanism as well. We propose solving this with a retro fit solution aimed at public space facilities that could be easily and cost efficiently, mounted on an array of door types. Thus allowing the user to avoid making hand to object contact, reducing the likeliness of spread.

02 Protect.

Shortage of protective equipment.
The issue being that there is not enough PPE equipment available for medical staff. Furthermore, it is uncomfortable and due to its disposable nature, can increase the risk of spread due to interaction with one’s face.
There probably aren’t many people that have missed the fact that the hospitals are screaming for supplies at the moment. The respirators, face masks, and gloves are in short supply. And since they are disposable there is much to want in terms of comfort for something that the medical staff is wearing for hours on end. It is also a precise process to put them on in the right way to allow for secure fit and spread containment. Since they are one-time use, the user must interact with their hands close to the face each time they exchange, which could be a risk of contamination.

Ease of manufacturing – Allow for multiple ways of production – Cost reduction – Both for patient/staff use – Reusable – Replaces multiple PPE’s
We propose creating a simple powered respirator with accompanying face mask that would increase the comfort for the healthcare user as well as reducing the contamination risk. The electronics built with off-the shelve components to ensure reduced costs as well as producibility. The mask could be made in a way to accommodate an array of production plants to ensure safe logistics in crisis situations. Designed in a way where it could be manufactured with alternative production methods such as 3D-printing, if production capabilities goes down. The mask could be used for medical staff as well as patients being connected to ventilation devices. Its design should reduce the risk of aerosolized saliva spray that could emerge from traditional respiratory face masks.

ICU situation in Sweden and globally

From 1993 to 2018 the number of ventilators in Sweden decreased by 87% from 4300 down to 574 (Socialstyrelsen, Svensk förening för anastesi och intesivvård).

Currently about 20 percent have required hospitalization due to COVID-19. Of those 20 percent, 13.8 percent had severe disease, with respiratory problems, and 6.1 percent had critical illness, including respiratory failure (Data from WHO).

Shortage of Ventilators
The issue is that we have a very limited amount of ventilators in both Sweden and the world to supply for the demand in crisis situations.
Since the coronavirus attacks the respiratory organs, we might have an enormous need for ventilators in the very near future, as well as seeing immediate needs right now at some places in the world. There have also been studies showing that simpler ventilators could be connected to patients with milder symptoms to reduce the risks of them needing a conventional ventilator further on.

There are currently a wide number of people and companies working on solutions for different types of ventilators. The demand is immense and we need to be looking at different types of solutions to a multitude of situations in order to solve them all. We propose a project to develop a ventilator with as many standardized components as possible. The design kept to basic design to increase producibility, reduce cost and ensure the supply chain. We see the user scenario as being connected to patients with milder symptoms to ensure that critical patients get access to conventional ventilators. As an added functionality of being able to be used as an ICU ventilator if needed. The optimum would be to reduce it to a cost where it can be stock piled in case of emergency.
